Role: Assistant Project Engineer
Salary: circa £29,000 per annum depending on experience.
Location: Leeds
Contract Type: Full time - Permanent
Office Requirement: Hybrid - minimum of 3 days a week in the office. Travel to other offices within the TRU route is expected as of when required.

This role supports the TRU Digital Engineering team in delivering one of the UK¿s most significant deployments of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), specifically the European Train Control System (ETCS), helping to modernise the Transpennine route across the North of England. It's ideal for someone who is keen to build practical skills, work alongside experienced engineers, and gain exposure to real-world railway digital systems.
As an Assistant Project Engineer, you'll contribute to the development, review and assurance of engineering outputs, support requirements and interface management, and help coordinate technical activities across multiple disciplines. The role offers strong development opportunities, including mentoring from senior engineers, exposure to Network Rail standards and assurance processes, and involvement in route-wide system integration activities. It's a chance to grow your engineering capability while playing a meaningful part in a nationally important digital rail upgrade.
Some of the key accountabilities of this role are:
1. Assist the Project Engineer in the preparation of specifications.
2. Assist the Project Engineer in the supervision of design development and the checking of designs.
3. Assist the Project Engineer in the monitoring of construction work to monitor compliance with design, standards, and legislation.
4. Assist the Project Engineer in the development and maintenance of quality systems throughout the lifecycle of projects.
5. Assist in the monitoring of project construction HSQE.
6. Maintain a log demonstrating own development and achievements towards meeting the competency requirements to discharge the role of a Project Engineer.
We need you to have:
Engineering qualification in a relevant discipline (Further or Higher Education).
Analytical and problem solving skills.
Good communication skills (verbal and written).
Understanding of railway operations.
It would be advantageous:
Appreciation of commercial and procurement procedures.
Experience of project engineering in a railway environment.
Experience of document management tools or processes.

Transpennine Route Upgrade
The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a £10.7 billion Programme of activities that is improving the railway between York and Manchester via Leeds and Huddersfield.
Stretching across the North of England, this key 76-mile Transpennine railway serves 23 stations, crosses over and dips under 285 bridges and viaducts, passes through six miles of tunnels, and crosses over 11 level crossings.
Proposed improvements as will deliver a hard-working, reliable railway for passengers, allowing for trains with more seats, more services and faster journey times.
