About our Route

Central Route is the Heart of Britain's Railway. More than a million people rely on our route every week, and we help transport nearly a million tonnes of freight every month. But we are more than just tracks and trains, we are a catalyst for jobs and opportunities, a connection to leisure and time with family and friends, and a foundation for communities and neighbourhoods.

We are a key part of the national network, with Birmingham New Street - the busiest station outside of London and the hub of the railway - connecting England, Scotland and Wales, with hundreds of services arriving and leaving every day.

About the role

About the role

Setting us up for future potential roles .

This is a talent pool for these locations Birmingham New Street, Coventry, Stourbridge, Walsall, Worcester, Wolverhampton, Leamington & Banbury

This is your chance to step into a truly dynamic, frontline role where every shift brings something new and your actions make an immediate, visible difference. You'll be out on the network, responding to incidents in real time and playing a vital part in keeping the railway safe, resilient, and moving for the millions of people who rely on it every day.

When situations escalate, you'll rise to the challenge - taking on the role of Rail Incident Officer and leading the response with confidence and clarity. You'll bring people together, take control of complex situations, and drive the safe and efficient recovery of services, knowing that your decisions have a direct impact on passengers, colleagues, and communities.

Working independently is part of this role, so being self-sufficient is key. Variety is guaranteed - from responding to incidents and supporting engineering works, to planning for seasonal challenges and helping drive performance across your area. You will also play a key role in shaping a safer, stronger railway for the future. By gathering crucial information following incidents, you'll contribute to investigations that drive learning and continuous improvement across the network.

Being ready for anything is essential in this role, and you'll take pride in making sure your vehicles and equipment are always prepared to respond at a moment's notice. You'll also be a visible presence on the network, helping tackle route crime, working alongside the British Transport Police, and protecting the railway environment. Collaboration is at the heart of everything you'll do. You'll work closely with the wider Operations team, getting involved in a range of activities that keep things running smoothly and safely. Where you're qualified, you'll also have the opportunity to step into signalling duties, adding even more breadth and development to your role.

Most importantly, you'll be a proud ambassador for Network Rail - building strong relationships with lineside neighbours and partners, and representing the organisation with professionalism, confidence, and care.

If you're someone who thrives on action, enjoys being out in the field, working independently and wants a role where you can genuinely make an impact every single day, this is an opportunity to be part of something bigger - keeping the railway moving and connecting people across the country.
