Systems Support Manager (Asset Management)

Who We Are

At Network Rail, we're the publicly owned operator of Britain's rail infrastructure.

We're trusted custodians of one of our nation's most critical public assets: Scotland's Railway.

We keep Scotland moving - connecting people and places, supporting businesses, public services and communities - driving economic, social and environmental success.

Our work spans almost 20% of the UK network and between 2024 and 2029, we're investing £4.8 billion to enhance our stations and routes, supporting new passenger and freight rolling stock.

Working together with train operators, our investment will mean a more reliable, climate resilient railway; a better customer experience; and greener, more sustainable travel that links cities, towns, urban and rural communities with each other and with the wider UK.

But it's our people who make this progress possible. At Network Rail Scotland, you'll find an inclusive, supportive and flexible working culture where your ideas are valued, your growth is encouraged, and your impact is real. Join us.

This is your railway - and it's moving forward. For more information about Network Rail click here.

About the role

The Engineering & Asset Management function of Scotland's Railway is responsible for providing engineering services that support the delivery of a safe, efficient railway network.

As Systems Support Manager (Asset Management), you will combine systems administration, data analysis and practical problem-solving to improve how our asset information is managed and used. You will support key asset management systems and databases, enable effective data processes, investigate data quality issues and develop insightful reporting. Working with engineering, maintenance, project and data teams, you will turn complex information into practical improvements.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working with systems and data and wants to develop their analytical and geospatial capabilities. You may use tools such as Power BI, SQL and Python to analyse information, automate checks and make our assets more visible. You will also contribute to projects that improve how railway assets are located, mapped and aligned with our geospatial network model.

You do not need to be an expert in every technology from day one. We are looking for someone with experience of administering and reporting from systems and databases, a strong interest in data analysis, and the curiosity to investigate issues, learn new tools and deliver reliable solutions. Your work will help improve asset data quality and support the safe, efficient maintenance and renewal of Scotland's Railway.

Here are some of the duties your role will include: -

  • Administer, support and improve asset management systems and databases, ensuring that information is maintained accurately, consistently and in accordance with agreed requirements.
  • Monitor, analyse and improve asset data quality, identifying exceptions, investigating their root causes and coordinating appropriate corrective action with engineering, maintenance, systems and data teams.
  • Develop analysis, dashboards and management information that improve visibility of railway assets, data quality, operational risks and improvement activity.
  • Use appropriate analytical tools and techniques, including Power BI, SQL, Python or equivalent technologies, to extract, transform, validate and interpret information from multiple sources.
  • Support the geospatial management of asset information, helping to improve the location, representation and alignment of assets with authoritative network and mapping data.
  • Coordinate system and data changes, gathering and assessing source information, completing appropriate quality checks and working with colleagues to update and improve system records.
  • Investigate and resolve system, database and reporting issues, applying problem-solving and working with colleagues to implement effective solutions.
  • Work collaboratively with engineers, maintenance teams, project teams and system specialists to understand requirements, validate asset information and deliver practical, sustainable solutions.
  • Promote effective data governance and provide clear advice, guidance and briefings on the effective use of asset systems, databases, reports and data-management processes.
  • Develop and maintain repeatable procedures, guidance and controls so that system administration and data-management activities are consistent, auditable and resilient.
  • Take ownership of assigned activities, following actions through to completion and communicating progress, risks, dependencies and support needs clearly.
  • Identify opportunities to automate manual activities and improve existing processes, reducing duplication and making asset information easier for colleagues to access and use.
